Support Heart Health (CONT.)
African American adults are 40% more likely to have hypertension and 30% more likely to die of heart disease than our white counterparts. Our children are not spared either because, according to the American Heart Association, 49% of Black women have heart disease by age 20.
Although there are many obstacles to overcome in improving health outcomes and closing the gaps of health disparity, one of the first steps is to educate the African-American community about the signs and symptoms of this deadly disease to increase recognition and response time to seek necessary medical care.
As a result of this public health issue, Dr. Yolanda Cares Foundation is hosting our FIFTH ANNUAL Heart-to-Heart Red Carpet Affair. This community event is free for our virtual audience, local residents and frontline heroes of the DMV (who will be honored by the DC Mayor for their service), and is taking place on February 18, 2023 at THEARC’s Black Box Theater in Southeast Washington, DC, where the population is overwhelmingly African-American (up to 95%), the income of 67% of households is under $50K, and 36% of the residents live under the poverty line.
